The values of Freemasonry are based on integrity, kindness, honesty and fairness. Freemasons are taught to practice charity and to care, not only for their own, but also for the community as a whole – both by charitable giving, and by voluntary efforts and works as individuals.

Charity is something that many already practice but to the Freemason it is very special and close to their hearts.

Freemasonry is the second largest organisation for donations to charities and worthwhile causes and only The National Lottery gives more.

Freemasonry not only supports Masonic Charities and National and International disasters but also gives freely to local charities. All the money for good causes is raised from within the organisation – we do not collect on the streets or any other public area.

At a candidates first meeting (his initiation ceremony) the importance of charity is explained to him and he is encouraged to ‘give freely’  BUT only without detriment to his family or his personal circumstances.

Every new member will be encouraged to take out an annual or monthly ‘Covenant’ to Masonic Charities which should be within his personal means and not cause hardship to his family. This will be a private and confidential arrangement between the member and the lodge Charity Steward.

The welfare of the lodge members and their families is managed by the Lodge Almoner. He will visit the sick, bereaved and infirmed whilst liaising with the Provincial Grand Almoner if specialist care is needed. Private treatment can be arranged together with other welfare issues in a totally confidential way although some contribution towards the cost maybe required. At Christmas he may visit the lodge widows and deliver a Christmas present on behalf of the members of the lodge and is often assisted in this happy task by other lodge members.
